MANILA, Philippines All he wants is for Manny Pacquiao to have a good time.
“That’s all. Just have a good time,” said Freddie Roach yesterday, the eve of Pacquiao’s 33rd birthday.
Roach, who hooked up with Pacquiao in 2001 to form probably the greatest partnership in boxing, is in Los Angeles, and couldn’t make it to the party.
But the five-time Trainer of the Year awardee said he’ll be in the Philippines the first week of January.
He said he’d be flying in with Top Rank chief Bob Arum, to sit down with Pacquiao and work on the best possible fights to make next year.
“I’ll be there,” he said.
Roach said as the whole world wants, Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains in the center of the radar.
“There are a lot of fights out there. But obviously Mayweather is number one,” he told The STAR over the phone.
But there are a couple of others like Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto or Tim Bradley.
Roach said he prefers the latter.
“Probably Bradley because we’ve done the others,” he said, referring to Marquez, whom Pacquiao had defeated twice in three matches, the other one being a draw, and Cotto, whom Pacquiao stopped inside 12 rounds in 2009.
“But Cotto could still be a good fight,” he added.
But of course, it’s still Mayweather, whom Roach had described as the only challenge out there for Pacquiao.
“If possible, Mayweather,” said Roach.
Could that be his other birthday wish for Pacquiao? A Mayweather fight in 2012?
“Yes,” he said.
