While flash floods devastated Southern region of Philippines, congressman Manny Pacquiao made an announcement that created quite a storm around the boxing world. Turning thirty three years young today, pound for pound king of sweet science, Pacquiao sent the shockwaves throughout the boxing universe by stating that he would be willing to take less money in order to sign a contract to fight undefeated American super star Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Taking a page of what he learned during so far brief political career, congressman Manny Pacquiao decided to use a first rule of negotiations which is to compromise. As reported earlier today by Nick Giongo of Manila Bulletin, Ring’s magazine top pound for pound fighter said from his home in General Santos that he is willing to take a pay cut to face Floyd Mayweather. Carrying a whole country on his shoulders Manny Pacquiao has always said that all he wants to do is to make his people happy. His people want to see Pacquiao Mayweather super fight next year. Now Manny puts his money where his mouth is. Even though it could end up being a lot of money Pacquiao is wailing to do that as long as the fight happens. As if they were playing chess Pacman made a move with his pond, E2 to E4. Next move, Floyd Mayweather.
Only time will tell whether putting undefeated Floyd Mayweather in a driver seat of negotiations would be a good idea. For now all the rumors that camp Pacquiao was not so eager to fight Mayweather any longer due to his lees than stellar performance against Marquez were dispelled.
In a recent interview with Fight hype, unbeaten Mayweather said:” I am telling you now; I am the best that ever did it with or without Pacquiao fight. May 5th is the day. He said that he agreed to take the blood and urine. No problem, let’s get it.” Manny Pacquiao has expressed a sincere willingness to test whether Floyd Mayweather is the best that ever did it. According to a report from my colleague Examiner, Michael Marley, promoter Bob Arum recently indicated that there were no more stumbling blocks to putting this fight together. Arum said that both Floyd and Manny really want the fight. That is the recipe for success.
I have been asking Santa during this Holiday season to make Manny Pacquiao Floyd Mayweather mega bout a reality next year. Apparently my Christmas wish along with wishes of millions of boxing fans around the world coincides with a birthday wish of Manny Pacquiao. Stay tuned for further developments.
